Reddam Racing’s Pavel (Creative Cause) captured his Santa Anita debut in authoritative fashion to become the second “TDN Rising Star� of the day. Overlooked at odds of 7-1, the gray broke sharply to dispute the pace inside a pair of rivals through an opening quarter-mile in :22.39. Moving ahead to seize the advantage entering the turn, the sophomore drew off confidently in the stretch and reported home 4 1/2 lengths in front of Little Juanito (Exchange Rate).

The winner is a half-brother to Caracortado (Cat Dreams), MGSW & MGISP, $885,775; and He’ll Pay (Haynesfield), SW & MGSP, $180,699. His unraced dam Mons Venus produced a full-brother to the winner in 2015; a Fed Biz filly in 2016; and a Carpe Diem colt Apr. 29 of this year.
