Cosmo Brave as Fawree Fluffs His Lines

Cosmo Charlie | DRC / Andrew Watkins

There was drama at the start of the opener on Super Saturday as warm favourite Fawree (Candy Ride {Arg}) ballooned the gates a split second before they opened and unshipped Bernard Fayd'Herbe as the field broke away. The colt had given trouble in the stalls on his previous start and this will not have done his confidence any good. Oblivious to this was Cosmo Charlie (Stay Thirsty) who bounced out smartly under Pat Dobbs and put his early speed to good use to dominate the race from the front. Approaching the straight Doug Watson's colt was being stalked by both Qatar Man and Capezzano and as they straightened up it was Qatar Man who threw down the greatest challenge. Hard as the Marco Botti trainee tried, Cosmo Charlie was equally game in front and he eventually saw Qatar Man off to win by a length with Capezzano five lengths back in third. Cosmo Charlie disappointed last time in the G3 UAE Guineas and the application of a visor on Saturday seemed to have a positive effect. “He didn't know what to do the last day, he was quite immature, and the plan was to go forward and if he didn't stay, he didn't stay,” said Pat Dobbs post race. “He's a quick learner but a funny little horse. I thought there was a doubt he'd stay but Doug said his father stayed, and he would stay.”

Having beaten Capezzano impressively on his debut at Meydan Dec. 17 Cosmo Charlie ran a fine race in defeat when second to Fly At Dawn (Discreet Cat) in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial Jan 26. having looked the likely winner until caught close home. His run in the UAE 2000 Guineas halted that progress but he looks firmly back on track now with an appearance on Dubai World Cup night now on the cards. “He is a nice little horse and we go to the UAE Derby with him,” confirmed his trainer Doug Watson. “He broke poorly in the Guineas, which messed up the whole race for him but we still had confidence in him as he galloped really well, so we were hopeful.”
