Sunday's G2 Charm Spirit Dahlia S. at Newmarket is all about potential, and Ballydoyle's Somehow (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) the one to beat coming off a win in the Listed Victor McCalmont Memorial S. over 100 yards further than this trip at Gowran Park a week ago. She had the re-opposing Skiffle (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) 7 1/2 lengths behind in third when capturing the G3 Dance Design S. over this trip at The Curragh in August, but that rival's trainer Charlie Appleby is keen to try again. “I am pleased with the way she has done during the winter. Like most Dubawis, she has done great from three to four,” he explained. “She had three quick runs at the start of her 3-year-old career and she needed a break after that. We gave her one run at the back-end over nine furlongs at The Curragh and that was her put away for the season. There were no abnormalities with her. She's an honest workhorse. Her work has been good and I have been pleased with it. The trip will be on the sharp side, but the quick ground will suit. She will be stepping up in trip afterwards, as we are working back from the Lancashire Oaks.”
Marco Botti tried Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar's Aljazzi (GB) (Shamardal) in the 1000 Guineas on this card 12 months ago and she was 10th at 100-1, but has since demonstrated why that decision was made and enters the fray off a win in the Listed Snowdrop Fillies' S. at a mile on Kempton's Polytrack on Apr. 15. “She won well at Kempton and has come out of that race in fantastic form. I am really happy with her,” he said. “She will handle the track, because she won there as a 2-year-old on her first start. The ground might be a touch too quick, but at the same time the ground was fast when she won at Haydock. Ryan Moore said she is not short of speed, but she should definitely stay the extra furlong. It is a step up in class, but she is a nice filly and hopefully she can improve her profile.”
