Next month’s G1 July Cup at Newmarket could have a strong international line-up with a distinct possibility of the Australian-trained Brazen Beau (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) again going head-to-head with Undrafted (Purim), his conqueror in last week’s G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot. Chris Waller’s runner ploughed a lone furrow up the Ascot straight with none of the other riders keen to follow Craig Williams, a move that many felt lead to his defeat. Brazen Beau ran in the colours of On Track Racing at Ascot, but if lining up at Newmarket, he will probably be donning the Godolphin blue. Sheikh Mohammed bought into the horse before Ascot. Explaining the current ownership structure of the horse Henry Plumptre, Godolphin’s representative in Australia, explained, “The relationship with On Track was very relaxed, they leased the horse back until the end of June, which gave them the opportunity of going to Ascot. We also agreed that if Sheikh Mohammed was to have the pleasure of watching the horse run in his colours, it should be in the July Cup.
“So, effectively as of now, although not officially until the end of June, the horse will still be trained by Chris, but he’ll run in the blue colours on July Cup day, weather permitting.” Undrafted finished fourth in the July Cup last year but proved he belonged at the top table with an emotional win last week for Wesley Ward under an inspired Frankie Dettori ride.
