Hugh Bowman and Craig Williams on Saturday sealed respectively the Sydney and Melbourne jockeys' premiership titles for the 2016/17 season. Bowman won the title with a win aboard Prada Miss (Aus) (Northern Meteor {Aus}) in the TAB Highway race at Rosehill, but copped a seven-meeting suspension four races later for careless riding after his mount Wild 'N' Famous (NZ) (Fast 'n' Famous {Aus}) was demoted to second for interfering with Most Exalted (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}), the promoted winner.
Despite Caulfield's Saturday card being abandoned after just four races due to high winds, Craig Williams picked up the win he needed to secure his sixth premiership title. His win was aboard the 2-year-old Shamport (Aus) (Shamardal).
“It's been a great season,” Williams told Racing and Sports. “It was a great fight with [apprentice] Beau [Mertens, second in the premiership], who was riding so well and consistently throughout the whole season. All the people around me worked hard and were very supportive. This premiership is also for them.”
