Hemp Hemp Hurray followed up a wire-to-wire debut score with a dominant track-and-pounce win in the Tyro S. at Monmouth. Bet to favoritism first out July 9 at Belmont, the bay coasted to a four-length triumph, and he was made the second choice to double up in this four-horse Sunday feature. Phonemyposseagain (Posse) was away sharpest of all, relegating Hemp Hemp Hurray to second early on, and jockey Albin Jimenez had to tap on the brakes a few times in the early stages. Splitting horses in the two-path midway around the turn, the Ramsey colorbearer swept past the pacesetter at the eighth pole and drew off with authority, romping home ahead of that one.
“I thought I was going to be in front, but [Jose] Ferrer's horse [Phonemyposseagain] had so much speed, I had to sit back,” said Jimenez. “Around the turn, I had so much horse, I just moved out and he did the rest.”
The winner's second dam, Lexa (Fr) (Sanglamore), a MGSW in France and a GSW in the U.S., is a half to G1SW Leariva (Irish River {Fr}) out of MGSW/G1SP Leandra (Fr) (Luthier {Fr}).
