I'LL TAKE CHARGE (f, 3, Indian Charlie–Take Charge Lady {Broodmare of the Year, MGISW, $2,480,377}, by Dehere), purchased by Mandy Pope's Whisper Hill Farm for $2.2 million at the 2013 Keeneland September sale, recovered from a slow beginning and was closing well to be second in her May 13 debut over track and trip. After another akward beginning, the 2-5 favorite, who was adding Lasix for this effort, rated off the early leaders along the rail through fractions of :22.64 and :46.71. Waiting for racing room on the turn, the bay filly was tipped out four wide into the stretch and forged to the lead to win geared down by three lengths. Smart Alex (Smarty Jones) was second. Out of broodmare of the year Take Charge Lady, I'll Take Charge is a half-sister to Take Charge Indy (A.P. Indy, GISW, $1,103,496); and Will Take Charge (Unbridled's Song, Ch. 3yo Colt, MGISW, $3,924,648); as well as to the dam of juvenile champion filly Take Charge Brandi (Giant's Causeway, MGISW, $1,680,126). Take Charge Lady produced a filly by War Front this spring. Take Charge Brandi's half-sister by War Front sold for $1.25 million at last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale.
