Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm's Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) was in fine form following another romping win in the GI Woodward S. Saturday, trainer Steve Asmussen reported Sunday morning. The speedy chestnut rated and pounced in the Woodward, drawing clear to a rousing 10 1/4-length victory and notching a local Grade I double on the heels of his score in the Aug. 5 GI Whitney S.
“He came back perfect,” Asmussen said. “We're on a fun ride, He's won three Grade Is since he came back from Dubai, three Grade Is by over 22 something lengths. He's the best one in the barn. What makes these horses great is how they compete on the racetrack.”
Asmussen continued to suggest that the Woodward was the 4-year-old's strongest performance yet.
“Absolutely, because of the circumstances of the race, more pace in the race, three quarters in [1:10], and still finished up great,” he said. “It's more taxing, but it's perfect because of the nine-week break we have for the Breeders' Cup.”
Gun Runner is expected to make his next start in the GI Breeders' Cup Classic Nov. 4.
