Shillelagh Slew (Chief Seattle–Frippalina, by Theatrical {Ire}), Canada's Sovereign Award-winning 3-year-old of 2006, passed away earlier this year in Cyprus, where he was standing at stud.
Bred in Quebec by Haras du Chevrillard, Shillelagh Slew was stakes-placed at two, but came to hand during his sophomore season, winning the Prince of Wales S. via DQ before adding open-length victories in the GIII Canadian Derby and GIII Ontario Derby. He was also a close third in the Breeders' S. Shillelagh Slew was retired with five wins from 17 starts for trainer Michael DePaulo and earnings of over $736,000.
Purchased to stand stud in Cyprus, Shillelagh Slew sired eight winners, and his owner, Dr. David H. James was in the process of making arrangements to return the horse to the U.S. following his stud career. Old Friends' Michael Blowen had reportedly contacted Dr. James about that possibility, but news emerged recently of Shillelagh Slew's passing.
“The veterinarian, Dr. Stavros Yianikkouris…informed me that Slew developed a very severe infection in his hind quarter which became very swollen and [they were] unable to control the infection. Slew was eventually euthanized,” Dr. James wrote.
