Record-Setting Exceed and Excel Colt in Melbourne

A colt from the second crop of champion Australian sprinter Exceed and Excel (Aus) (Danehill) set a new record price for a yearling sold in Melbourne when Darley Australia went to A$750,000 for a son of G3 Lowland S. winner Gentle Call (NZ) (Classic Fame). The hammer price easily bested the previous record of A$600,000. The transaction was a financial boon for Peter Liston, who consigned the bay under the banner of his Three Bridges Thoroughbreds. Liston acquired Gentle Call for A$140,000 in foal to Choisir (Aus) with this colt at her side at last year's Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale in Sydney. Darley General Manager Olly Tait signed the winning ticket. “He's like a lot of the Exceed and Excels–he's very balanced, athletic and has a great attitude,” he commented.
