2-1 Choice Big Brown Wins the Kentucky Derby; Eight Belles Breaks Down After Finishing Second

All the pre-race hype surrounding Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby was swirling around Big Brown (Boundary) and the powerful bay, who was bet down to 2-1 favoritism, justified the support with an emphatic five-length victory over the only filly in the field, Eight Belles. Denis of Cork, who broke poorly from the 16 hole, recovered well and came on to finish third. In a sad turn of events, Eight Belles, who appeard to cross the wire in fine form, broke down after galloping out and was euthanized on the track, after sustaining fractures in both front legs.
