Barretts gets back to its roots when it plays host to its annual Fall Yearlings and Horses of All Ages Sale at the Los Angeles County Fairgounds in Pomona Tuesday morning beginning at 11 a.m.
A total of 288 horses are catalogued for the one-day auction, including 49 broodmare/broodmare prospects, 10 juveniles, nine weanlings and 220 yearlings, bred predominantly in California.
Among horses that could attract attention on pedigree are hip 34, a filly by the late Unusual Heat whose second dam Winning In Style (Silveyville) was responsible for Unusual Heat's Eclipse Award-winning older male Acclamation; hip 62, a Goldencents half-sister to Piedi Bianchi (Overanalyze), second in this year's GI Del Mar Debutante and third in the GI Chandelier S.; hip 97, an Animal Kingdom half-brother to GSW Praying For Cash (Songandaprayer); and hip 161, a colt by The Factor who is a half-brother to GSW Silent Roar (Unbridled's Song).
The sale will also feature a dispersal of the California-based breeding stock of John Antonelli. Best known as the breeder of dual champion Songbird (Medaglia d'Oro), Antonelli was also responsible for Grade III winner La Traviata (Johannesburg–Piedras Negras), who went on to produce 2016 G1 Darley Irish Oaks and G1 Darley Yorshire Oaks victrix Seventh Heaven (Ire) (Galileo), G1SW Crusade (Mr. Greeley), MGSP Cristoforo Columbus (Henrythenavigator) and GSP Coat of Arms (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Hip 47, a California-bred daughter of top freshman sire Violence from the family of GISWs Gold Fever, Boisterous and Bellamy Road and later in the sale, the filly's dam, Veiled Threat (You and I) (hip 245) in foal to Grazen. The dispersal is being handled by agent Greg Fanning.
Last year's October Sale was topped by a then first-crop son of Smiling Tiger–Erica's Smile (Williamstown), who fetched a final bid of $190,000 from Steve Gasperrelli's Slugo Racing. Now named Tigre Di Slugo, the chestnut is in training at Santa Anita and most recently worked a half-mile in :49.40 (24/47) Oct. 13.
