The Jockey Club Forms Thoroughbred Safety Committee

The Jockey Club Chairman Ogden Mills Phipps Thursday announced the formation of a seven-member committee to study every aspect of equine health. The issues to be reviewed by the committee include breeding practices, medication and track surfaces. The committee will be comprised of Chairman Stuart Janney III, John Barr, Jimmy Bell, Dr. Larry Bramlage, Donald Dizney, Dell Hancock and Dr. Hiram Polk Jr. Three of the seven members of the panel participated in the two Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summits, and the recommendations resulting from the Summits will be the basis of the work done by The Jockey Club committee. “We will reach out to involve others in the industry and we will do everything in our power to encourage changes that will benefit the breed in any way,” Phipps said in a press release. “We will do this in a timely manner.”
