Frank “Scoop” Vessels, the owner of Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, California, was killed in a plane crash Wednesday in Oregon, according to the American Quarter Horse Association. The report on the association's website said that Vessels and a friend, Sam Cannell, were returning from a fishing expedition, and Vessels was believed to be piloting the plane. The San Diego Tribune reported that Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said the twin-engine Aero Commander 500B crashed under “unknown circumstances” about 5 a.m. Wednesday 70 miles south of Burns, Oregon. A leading figure in Quarter Horse Racing, Vessels was a past president of the AQHA and is survived by his sons Bryan, Colt and Kash. The farm stands In Excess, among other Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse stallions.
