Into Mischief Filly Remains Unbeaten in Beaumont Score

Gas Station Sushi | Coady photo

Gas Station Sushi showed significant ability in capturing her 6 1/2-furlong debut last August at Del Mar and confirmed that talent with a convincing victory in her return to action in the GIII Beaumont S. at Keeneland Sunday. The bay overpowered her rivals in the lane to notch her second win in as many tries.

While Gas Station Sushi's win at Del Mar was off a forwardly placed trip, she had to rally from midpack Sunday at Keeneland after breaking a step slowly. Rushing up to midpack behind a half-mile in :22.50, she was shuffled back a bit and waited behind a wall of rivals as the leaders completed a half in :45.41. Making steady progress on the turn, she angled to the four path at the head of the lane, collared the leaders in midstretch and drew clear to claim the win. Kelly's Humor launched a prolonged bid from the rear of the pack to complete the exacta.

Gas Station Sushi is the first winner at Keeneland for the California-based Richard Baltas barn, which shippoed Madam Dancealot (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) in to run third in last autumn's GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. For her win, Gas Station Sushi earned 10 qualifying points towards the GI Kentucky Oaks May 4.

Pedigree Notes:

Scooped up by these connections for $240,000 at the 2017 OBS March Sale after breezing a furlong in :10 flat, the winner hails from the family of GI Vosburgh S. hero and GI Breeders' Cup Sprint runner-up Taste of Paradise (Conquistador Cielo). Five Star Daydream, who captured a stakes and placed in the GIII Tempted S., produced a colt by Archarcharch in 2016 and a filly by Can the Man in 2017. She visited Hit It a Bomb last spring.
