One year after his talented racemare Stacelita (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}) landed the Eclipse Award as the nation’s leading turf female, owner Marty Schwartz stepped to the podium to accept the same award for his GI Breeders’ Cup Filly/Mare Turf heroine Zagora (Fr) (Green Tune). Zagora amassed five wins from her eight trips to the post in 2012, including a blow-out victory and a career-best 103 Beyer Speed Figure in winning the GII Ballston Spa S. at Saratoga in August. The gutsy chestnut led late, but was beaten a half-length in rain-softened Belmont turf in the GI Flower Bowl Invitational S. Sept. 29, but atoned for that defeat with a 3/4-length victory over Marketing Mix (Medaglia d’Oro) in the Filly/Mare Turf. Marketing Mix was a distant second in the voting.
