Rachel Alexandra 'Serious' Following Surgery

Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro–Lotta Kim, by Roar), the 2009 Horse of the Year, was listed in 'serious' condition late Wednesday evening after undergoing surgery for post-foaling complications at Rood and Riddle near Lexington. The 7-year-old mare gave birth to a 140-pound filly by Bernardini early Tuesday morning, but developed complications and underwent surgery Wednesday evening for a bruised area in her small colon. “A full prognosis cannot be determined at this time, but her condition is serious,” a release from Stonestreet Farm said. “We are solely focused on making sure Rachel is as comfortable as possible,” owner Barbara Banke stated. “She is showing the same strength and courage now that she demonstrated on the track. Our hearts are broken by this turn of events and I can only ask that you send your thoughts and prayers to Rachel now.”
