Summering, who was given a 'TDN Rising Star' nod when impressively capturing her course-and-distance unveiling July 29, returned with a more workmanlike victory to stay unbeaten in Monday's Juvenile Fillies Turf S. at Del Mar. Dueling on a fast pace when favored in her bow, the Glen Hill homebred still had plenty in the tank to romp by five lengths. Crushed down to 3-10 off the strength of that effort, Summering wasn't away all that great and pulled some early, but soon settled to sit a close-up second through splits of :23.57 and :48.91. Taking charge from the longshot pacesetter at the quarter pole, she edged clear into the lane and kept to her task to score by 1 1/2 lengths. Lady Prancealot (Ire), making her North American debut, finished up full of run from last to be second.

“This is sweet; to win a stakes in these silks [Glen Hill Farm, where he got his start riding for trainer Tom Proctor] makes this so special,” said winning rider Drayden Van Dyke. “Today I had what you'd call a golden trip. She was always there and fired big. And I had a tough time pulling her up; she wanted to keep on going. She's a good one.”

Graded winner Wishing Gate, who also raced in the colors of Glen Hill Farm, died after producing her second foal, a full-brother to Summering named Food and Wine, last year. Summering's second dam was also a productive carrier of the Glen Hill orange and black, having secured a pair of Grade III wins on the Churchill turf.

“This is a very special place for our family,” said Glen Hill's Craig Bernick. “I think this is my 24th consecutive summer coming out here and the second since my grandfather [Leonard Lavin] passed away. It's nice to have a filly like this–the fourth generation in the family that we've owned–win a stakes in her second start. We'll go on to Santa Anita and if she wins again we'd consider the [GI] Breeders' Cup [Juvenile Fillies Turf], but she'd have to win well. One step at a time.” Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
