Head-Maarek Offers 'Mast' Excuse

Criquette Head-Maarek believes Juddmonte colorbearer and G1SW Full Mast (Mizzen Mast) “choked” in the G1 Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly Sunday. The Mizzen Mast colt made a pleasing reappearance at Chantilly in a Group 3 last month and there was plenty of confidence in him heading into the weekend Group 1. But after being lit up early on, he battled for the lead with Aktabantay (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Kodi Bear (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) and faded tamely to beat only the former home.

“Full Mast choked, he went too fast,” said Head-Maarek. “He got a little upset at the stalls but he can do that so I don't think that was the problem. The three of them went too fast, they had no chance. We'll take him to Deauville, I'll try and find a race for him there. It would have been the [G1] Jacques le Marois [Aug. 16] if he had won but now we'll have to think about it. These things happen in racing.”
