Fred and Jane Brei, who operate the Florida-based Jacks or Better Farm, took a gamble last year, taking home their Medaglia d'Oro–Bayou Plans (Bayou Hebert) colt despite a hammer price of $325,000. Apparently they know when to fold 'em and when to hold 'em. Their patience and confidence in their well-bred colt paid massive dividends yesterday afternoon, when the half-brother to GISW Midas Eyes (Touch Gold) was knocked down to John Ferguson for $1.6 million. In addition to Midas Eyes, who broke his maiden for the couple before selling him privately to Edmund Gann, hip 94 is also kin to the Breises three-time graded winner Bayou's Lassie (Outflanker) and the stakes-winning Bourbon N Blues (Lycius). The colt was consigned by the Wavertree Stables agency of Ciaran Dunne.
