Jamie McCalmont, underbidder on a Dutch Art (GB) colt a few hips earlier, came out on top for an Elusive Quality colt when bidding 760,000gns (US$1,219,725) Thursday at Tattersalls. It was the highest price ever paid at a European breeze-up sale and surpassed the previous Craven record price of 625,000gns. The juvenile, consigned by Lynn Lodge Stud, is out of Gender Dance (Miesque's Son) and is a half to group placed Quarrel (Maria's Mon).
“He is a very athletic colt,” said McCalmont, who had to see off a determined Ross Doyle for the colt. “He is by a sire who is doing very well. And to be honest I had not thought too much beforehand where his price would get to. I am not sure who is to train him.”
“This is a really strong sale,” McCalmont added. “I have been to the breeze-ups in the US, and I think this is a far stronger market.”
