Hot Heir Skier was beaten just a half-length when second going 5 1/2 furlongs in his debut at Laurel
Nov. 20 before graduating by 3 1/4 lengths at that oval Dec. 26. The chestnut raced between rivals in a three-way battle for the lead through fractions of :22.92 and :46.52. He kicked clear of Oliver Zip in upper stretch and looked home free before racing erratically, as Oliver Zip rerallied to just miss and Charleymillionaire closed for third in a tight finish. “Between horses he was very relaxed,” said winning jockey Jose Ortiz. “He settled down very good, like an older horse. When I ask him to go, he goes, but when I hit him once, he acted a little green. I just showed him the whip a little bit because he acted a little green, but he’s a nice horse.” Winning trainer Ben Perkins added, “Going down the backside I thought he was in a good spot and [Ortiz] was kind of sitting on him, just waiting. I had told Jose he’s got a real good turn of foot when you ask him, and he did, he just ran away from those horses. He got a little green through the stretch, which he has a tendency to do.” Click for the brisnet.com chart or VIDEO.
