Triple Threats
Bayern & Midnight Hawk Ready for San Felipe…
Kaleem Shah’s Bayern (Offlee Wild), a J “TDN Rising Star” J off a one-mile allowance victory at Sanita Anita Feb. 13, worked five panels in :59.80 Monday in preparation for the GII San Felipe S. Conditioner Bob Baffert is hopeful that the dark bay continues to improve. “He’s a fast horse and stretched out nicely,” Baffert said. “We thought he could stretch out, but you never know until they do it. We want to see a good effort, win, lose, or draw.”
Fellow Baffert trainee and “TDN Rising Star” Midnight Hawk (Midnight Lute) went a half-mile in :49.40 Tuesday morning. Winner of the GIII Sham S. two back, he finished third in GII Robert B. Lewis S. Feb. 8. “He’s coming into this race really well,” said Baffert. However, he acknowledged the difficulties inherent in training 3-year-olds this time of year. “I just want to keep them healthy, and keep them together. That’s the hardest part right now. This is when we start getting really serious, we’re two races out.”
Next Targets for Two Baffert Trainees Up in the Air…
Indianapolis (Medaglia d’Oro) hasn’t worked since covering six panels in 1:11.40 at Santa Anita Feb. 5. Conditioned by Bob Baffert for Mrs. Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, the undefeated winner of the San Pedro S. had suffered a minor setback, but is on the mend.
“I had a setback with him,” said Baffert. “He got sick and then the rain came, so I haven’t really planned anything yet. He’s been jogging, but nothing serious just light training. I probably won’t know for another couple weeks [where he’s headed].”
Baffert is also pleased with the progress of Chitu (Henny Hughes), second in the GII Robert B. Lewis S. Feb. 8. The chestnut breezed five furlongs Tuesday morning in :59.60. His next start is undecided.
“He’s nominated,” added Baffert. “He could be in the GII Rebel S., or at Sunland Park. He could show up in New York, I don’t know yet.”
