Super’ Day for ’10 Derby Winner
Hip 263, a filly from the first crop of WinStar Farm’s Super Saver (Maria’s Mon), led the way for the 2010 GI Kentucky Derby hero at OBS March yesterday, bringing $675,000 from owners Alex and Jo Ann Lieblong. Tony Dutrow will train. Consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent XXI, the chestnut was offered on behalf of her breeder, WinStar Farm, after breezing a quarter in :21. Kenny Troutt’s operation purchased the multiple graded stakes placed Fusaichi Pegasus mare Melissa Jo while in foal to Bernardini for $210,000 at the 2010 Keeneland November sale. The 9-year-old is currently in foal to Bellamy Road and will be bred back to Medaglia d’Oro. “We’re really pleased,” WinStar President/CEO & Racing Manager Elliott Walden said. “[Hip 263] was a star–she’s always been a star. We had picked her out to go to a 2-year-old sale because we thought that she had the quality to showcase Super Saver well. It’s nice when it works out.” Plenty of other offspring by Super Saver were in high demand at the one-day auction, including Hip 164 ($325,000; consigned by King’s Equine, Agent VIII and purchased by Mike Ryan); Hip247 ($250,000; consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds LLC, agent and purchased by Klaravich Stable); Hip 293 ($240,000; consigned by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds LLC, agent and purchased by Xavier International Bloodstock); Hip 370 ($200,000; consigned by Stephens Thoroughbreds LLC, agent and purchased by West Point Thoroughbreds); Hip 128 ($150,000; consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, Agent XVI and purchased by S F Bloodstock); and Hip 198 ($150,000; consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent VIII and purchased by Vince J. Foglia). “It’s really good,” Walden continued of Super Saver’s early commercial success. “We’re very pleased with the ones in here–they’re very athletic and most of them have sold extremely well. I just couldn’t be happier. The phone’s been ringing for weeks now–that’s an indication that things are going quite well in Ocala [with his first crop of 2-year-olds].” Super Saver stands the 2014 season for $17,500 at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky.
