Claimed for $50,000 from Bill Mott and Black Swan Stable (who later bought back into the colt) when breaking his maiden second out at Aqueduct in Novemeber, Kid Cruz was second when treated with first-time Lasix in an Ozone Park allowance Jan. 26. He captured his first stakes win in impressive last-to-first fashion Laurel’s Private Terms S. over nine panels Mar. 8, and was forced to scratch from Aqueduct’s GI Twinspires.com S. two weeks earlier due to a sore shoulder. Closer early this time, the favorite stalked the leaders while racing wide into the first turn. Unleashed in between horses rounding the final bend, he powered to the front and collected the victory by daylight. “I was a little worried that they were going to take this race from wire-to-wire, but there was enough pressure to weaken the leader late,” said assistant trainer Marsha Barrs. “This horse really ran a terrific race even though we had to miss a work. We got knocked off the Derby trail after the Private Terms, but after some time off he’s back to his old self and our long range options include the [GI] Preakness [S. May 17], pending how he comes out of this race today.” Click for the brisnet.com chart orVIDEO.
