Private Zone (Macho Uno)–off since a strong second-place finish at 32-1 behind Flat Out (Flatter) in the GI Cigar Mile H. at Aqueduct Nov. 30–is gearing up for his 2014 debut. Last term’s GI Vosburgh Invitational S. winner worked three furlongs in :36.20 (8/27) June 2 and four furlongs in :48.60 (22/41) June 12. Both moves have taken place at Santa Anita. “He is doing super and we haven’t decided where his comeback race will be,” trainer Doug O’Neill commented. “We are working closely with Private Zone’s managing partner Rene Douglas [of Good Friends Stable] and we should know more within the next 30 days.” Private Zone, a Grade 1 winner in Panama, reeled off four straight second-place finishes on these shores–including the 2012 GI Malibu S.–before finishing ninth in last year’s G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan in March. The front-running bay put them back-to-back in game fashion in Del Mar’s Pirate’s Bounty S. Sept. 4 and Belmont’s Vosburgh Sept. 28, but could do no better than 10th in the GI Breeders’ Cup Sprint in Arcadia Nov. 2. Private Zone quickly erased that memory with a stellar performance in the Cigar Mile. –Steve Sherack
