Nothing But Net–KEESEP Tuesday

Hip Sex Sire Dam Price ($)
202 filly Distorted Humor Rock Candy 310,000
B-Fred W Hertrich III & John D Fielding (KY)
Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent CXXVI
Purchased by Shortleaf Stable
Fred Hertrich III went to $160,000 to acquire SW & GSP Rock Candy (Mineshaft) in foal to Dixie Union at this auction house’s November sale in 2010 and has done well breeding from the mare. The filly she was carrying at the time repaid about half that bill at the November sale the following year, while her first-crop son of Blame fetched $180,000 as a weanling here in 2012. With yesterday’s transaction, Hertrich and partner John Fielding went further into the black.

224 colt Quality Road Scarlet Love 210,000
B-Mill Ridge Farm et al (KY)
Consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent
Purchased by Northway Bloodstock
Under the name of his Nicoma Bloodstock, Headley Bell signed the ticket on Scarlet Love (Not For Love), a half-sister to GISW Visionaire (Grand Slam) and to GSW & MGISP Scarlet Strike (Smart Strike), for $130,000 carrying a foal by the late Indian Charlie at KEENOV in late 2011. Mill Ridge Sales sold that produce for a handsome $230,000 as a short yearling at the 2013 KEEJAN sale and added to their coffers yesterday. The colt’s dam is also kin to recent “TDN Rising Star” Tara’s Tango (Unbridled’s Song).

234 colt Tapit Seeinsbelieven 700,000
B-Gainesway Thoroughbreds (KY)
Consigned by Gainesway, Agent VI
Purchased by Conquest Stables
The braintrust at Gainesway picked up two-time winner Seeinsbelieven (Carson City) for a hefty $270,000 in foal to the farm’s Corinthian at KEENOV back in 2008, and to say the mating with Tapit has been a commercial success would be a monumental understatement. Her first produce by the super-sire realized $425,000 at this sale in 2011 and her next foal fetched $475,000 here last year. With Tapit as hot as a sire could possibly be, Ernie Semersky and Dory Newell’s operation dug even deeper for this grey colt. Seeinsbelieven has a filly foal of this year by To Honor and Serve (Bernardini).

253 colt Scat Daddy Siren Serenade 500,000
B-Capital Bloodstock (KY)
Consigned by Gainesway, Agent XLVII
Purchased by Mayberry Farm
An outfit called Pacific Bloodstock went to $170,000 to snag this grandson of four-time Grade I winner Versailles Treaty (Danzig)–the dam of G1SW George Vancouver (Henrythenavigator) and GSW & GISP Saarland (Unbridled), as a weanling at KEENOV last fall. Those connections had the good fortune of a major update when half-sister Luminance (Tale of the Cat) earned “TDN Rising Star” status with a smart Del Mar debut victory July 20, and they reaped the benefits Tuesday.

291 colt Uncle Mo Stormy Renee 550,000
B-Haymarket Farm (KY)
Consigned by Woods Edge Farm (Peter O’Callaghan), Agent
Purchased by MV Magnier
This half-brother to 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint winner Hightail (Mineshaft) was snapped up by Woods Edge’s Peter O’Callaghan for $170,000 at the FTKNOV sale last fall, and was one of eight horses from his champion sire’s first crop to achieve a six-figure pricetag as a weanling. In the 10 months since, the colt has shown great improvement, enough to attract a winning bid from the farm that stands the son of Indian Charlie.

322 filly Tiznow Tactful Lady 370,000
B-Tony Holmes & Tim Thornton (KY)
Consigned by Threave Main Stud, LLC, Agent
Purchased by G Watts Humphrey Jr
Tony Holmes acquired Tactful Lady (Langfuhr), a half-sister to MGSW Gone Astray (Dixie Union), for only $32,000 when offered not in foal at KEENOV in 2011. Holmes and co-breeder Tim Thornton bred the mare to Tiznow, and somewhat audaciously bought the mare back when bidding stalled out at $170,000 at the 2012 November sale. They were rewarded yesterday for that roll of the dice.

358 colt Pulpit Twist 600,000
B-Redmon Farm (KY)
Consigned by Indian Creek, Agent
Purchased by Maverick Racing
The Paris, Kentucky-based Redmon Farm shelled out $135,000 for Twist (Johannesburg), a half-sister to champion sprinter Silver Train (Old Trieste), carrying this foal in utero at the 2012 November sale. The mare foaled a colt Mar. 16, and some 18 months later, that dark bay made the top 10 list Tuesday afternoon. Twist was bred back to another A.P. Indy sire in Congrats and was represented by a filly earlier this year.

372 colt Fastnet Rock (Aus) Vapour (GB) 460,000
B-Greenwood Lodge Farm (KY)
Consigned by Greenwood Lodge Farm
Purchased by L. E. B.
When the opportunity knocked to buy a Galileo (Ire) filly from an outfit such as Juddmonte Farm, the collective braintrust of Greenwood Lodge Farm knocked back and landed Vapour (GB)–from the family of Nebraska Tornado and Phoenix Tower–for 80,000gns (about $129,688). Sent to this fashionable dual-hemisphere sire for an early cover, Vapour was shipped across the Atlantic and dropped this colt last January. Bred on the reverse cross responsible for Frankel (GB) and countless other stakes horses, the colt proved irresistible Tuesday.
