Tapit Filly To Join New Castle Honor Roll

Jim Crupi’s New Castle Farm has been the starting point for such Grade I winners as Uncle Mo, Stay Thirsty, Trinniberg, Little Mike and Zensational, and Crupi will be hoping those good fortunes can rub off on hip 316, a Tapit weanling filly he will be taking back to his Florida base, after spending $750,000 on her yesterday.

The January-foaled bay certainly has the right foundations for racetrack success. Her dam, the stakes-placed Ithinkisawapudycat (Bluegrass Cat), was purchased by Ashview Farm for $240,000 at this sale two years ago. Ashview partnered with Colts Neck Stable to breed this filly, whose second dam Unbridled Run (Unbridled) produced 2012 GI Alcibiades S. heroine Spring in the Air (Spring At Last), Canada’s champion 2-year-old filly. The filly’s third dam produced GII Breeders’ Futurity winner and sire Tejano Run, as well as the dam of G1 Racing Post Trophy winner Palace Episode.

“She’s a beautiful filly and by the right sire, as you can see from this sale,” Crupi remarked. “I think she’s got a big future.”

The bay was one of a handful of high-priced yearlings for her sire during the session. That group also included a $575,000 daughter of stakes-placed J Z Warrior (Harlan’s Holiday), sold to Stonestreet Stables; a $520,000 half-brother to multiple graded winner Thiskyhasnolimit (Sky Mesa), purchased by Baccari Bloodstock, and a $420,000 colt purchased by Sandridge Stable. Crupi said a decision had not been made as to whether she would be reoffered.

“She’s going to Florida, and we’ll go from there,” he said. Commenting on the market, he added, “It’s been very strong for a good horse.” –Kelsey Riley
