Bayern Still Possible For San Antonio
Despite a minor foot issue, Kaleem Shah’s GI Breeders’ Cup Classic victor Bayern (Offlee Wild) could still make the GII San Antonio S. in Arcadia Feb. 7.
“He had an abcess in his hind foot and the rain sort of set me back a little bit,” trainer Bob Baffert told the TDN. “I have been able to train him, but I haven’t been able to breeze him. [The abcess] just broke [Thursday].”
When the GI Haskell Invitational S. hero will make his next start is still unclear, but Baffert has not ruled out a rematch with dual Classic winner California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) and champion Shared Belief (Candy Ride {Arg}) in the San Antonio.
“Never say never,” the Hall of Famer remarked. “We will try to get there. We will know by the weekend. Hopefully we can breeze this weekend. If he doesn’t get a breeze in it will be tough [to make the San Antonio].”
Baffert added, “It’s just day to day with him. It’s just a set back, but it’s a minor one.”
