Dettori To Ride Golden Horn In Derby

Frankie Dettori has picked up the mount on G1 Epsom Derby favorite Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) for that June 6 Classic. Dettori was aboard Golden Horn’s John Gosden stablemate Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling) when finishing second to Golden Horn, under William Buick, in the May 14 G2 Dante S., but Jack Hobbs was partially bought by Godolphin this week, and thus one of that operation’s retained riders, including Buick, will take over the reins at Epsom.

“It’s an almost certainty that Frankie will be riding [Golden Horn],” that colt’s owner Anthony Oppenheimer told At The Races. “The only remark I remember Frankie saying after the Dante is he felt very sad when Golden Horn passed him.”

“It’s very exciting to have a really good horse,” Oppenheimer added. “Whatever happens in the Derby, he will be a really good horse. He’s in all the good races over a mile and a quarter later in the year.”
