Texas Red Works; Eyes Dwyer
Last year’s GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Texas Red (Afleet Alex), off since a runner-up finish in Santa Anita’s GII San Vicente S. Feb. 1 after a foot abscess knocked him off the Triple Crown trail, breezed five panels in an easy 1:02.80 in Arcadia Saturday.
He is likely to make his return to the races in Belmont’s $500,000 GIII Dwyer S. July 4 as opposed to the $350,000 GII Los Alamitos Derby the same day.
“The Dwyer is a one-turn mile, and the Los Al Derby is a mile and an eighth,” co-owner and trainer Keith Desormeaux noted. “The horse is 100% right now and if plans work out, we could run at Saratoga this summer, so the Dwyer in New York seems like a good starting point.”
