Criterion Impresses in Ascot Spin

Sir Owen Glenn's Criterion (NZ) (Sebring {Aus}), who is preparing for the G1 Prince of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot, pleased trainer David Hayes in workout at Ascot Tuesday. A three-time Group 1 winner in Australia–including the A$4 million G1 Queen Elizabeth S. Apr. 11–the 4-year-old was last seen finishing third in the G1 QEII Cup in Hong Kong Apr. 26.

“He's a horse that thrives on not a lot of work but we just felt that with it being six weeks between runs, we'd give him a look at Ascot and we've done that two weeks out from his race,” Hayes explained. “He's very good on a soft surface and it just slows a few of the others down, so if it rained we'd be very happy.”

The Prince of Wales's is shaping up as perhaps the most anticipated race of the meeting, with the likes of California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit), Cirrus des Aigles (Fr) (Even Top {Ire}), The Grey Gatsby (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and Japanese raider Spielberg (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) expected to clash.

“There are horses from Japan, America and the best of the Europeans–it's going to be a classic,” Hayes said.
