Off the mark in what turned out to be a decent maiden over five furlongs at this track May 8, Besharah had received further education en route to the Royal meeting when defying a penalty and besting Whatdoiwantthatfor in a Windsor conditions event June 1. No match for Acapulco (Scat Daddy) when third in the G2 Queen Mary S. staying over five furlongs at this venue’s mid-summer feature meeting June 17, the bay showed that this trip held no fears when a nose second to Illuminate (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in the July 10 G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket. Overcoming a tactical quandary and the slow ground that had concerned her trainer beforehand, she duly stamped her authority on this contest to deservedly open her black-type account. Tracking Rah Rah (GB) (Lonhro {Aus}) on the far side as the six runners split into three groups early, Besharah traveled notably strongly before being committed to the lead approaching the furlong pole. Despite veering left late on, she was always in total control en route to a commanding verdict over the Hannon pair Great Page and Whatdoiwantthatfor. The winning owner’s racing Manager Bruce Raymond said, “We were obviously a bit concerned about the ground, because she had never raced on it before and we didn’t know if she would go through it. I imagine we will go to York for the [Aug. 20] G2 Lowther S. then on to the G1 Cheveley Park S. [at Newmarket Sept. 26].” Richard Hannon said of his place-getters, “Great Page ran very well and she looks like she wants further, so we’ll go seven furlongs with her next. Whatdoiwantthatfor might go back to five furlongs. Something like the [Aug. 22] Listed Roses S. at York could be for her.”
