Sentiero Italia Rallies to Take Lake Placid
Updated: August 14, 2015 at 10:25 pm
Sentiero Italia unleashed a powerful late rally to secure her first graded stakes victory in Saratoga’s Lake Placid S. Friday afternoon. Supported as the favorite in this competitive five-horse affair, the bay broke well and tracked from a patient fourth just off the heels of the leading trio. Tipped out for a three-wide bid turning for home, the hombred surged past Miss Temple City, who had seized control in early stretch and was attempting to run away with the race, to secure her first black-type victory in style.
“You never know with a short field, but Joel [Rosario] rode her great,” winning trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said. “He saved a little ground the first turn and waited. We were angling out and I knew that we were going to finish strong. I had a lot of confidence in her; she was doing great. She’s a very talented filly and has a big kick, so it worked out very well today.” McLaughlin added that the GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S. at Keeneland Oct. 10 was under consideration as a future target for the winner.
Godolphin Stable racing manager Jimmy Bell was equally pleased. “Very nice, with a small field today, obviously Joel [Rosario] had a very good ride,” Bell said. “He was patient, stayed behind and bided his time and she has a very good kick to her. She’s got all the credentials, versatility, very good mind and a lovely body.”
Seventh behind Strict Compliance on debut in a Gulfstream turf sprint Mar. 11, Sentiero Italia showed marked improvement with a front-running score to earn her diploma when stretched out to 1 1/8 miles on the sod at Aqueduct Apr. 19. A decisive allowance winner over the Belmont lawn May 28, she was fourth behind undefeated Lady Eli (Divine Park) last time in the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S. July 4. The sophomore is a half to Ashkal Way, winner of the GI Citation H., GII Kelso Breeders’ Cup H. and GII Bernard Baruch H.
