Shogood Proved Too Good in Arlington-Washington Futurity

Updated: August 23, 2015 at 9:27 am

Shogood ran the 13-horse field off their feet to score an impressive front-running victory in the Arlington Washington Futurity. Taking up his preferred position at the head of affairs, the bay doled out early fractions of :22.89 and :46.34 from the fence with Will Munnings (Munnings) close behind. Showing the way into the lane, the crowd’s second choice instantly shot clear under a hand ride from Chris Emigh to score a decisive first black-type victory over longshot Van Damme. Missle Bomb got up for third over Will Munnings and favored Tremont S. winner Cocked and Loaded (Colonel John) could only manage fifth.

“He is just naturally fast and powerful. I was sitting on a lot of horsepower,” Emigh said. “I just tried to rein him in and he got around there.” Becker added, “We just fell into a good horse. John Wainwright did everything with this horse.”

Shogood was privately purchased by these connections following a runner-up effort on debut for previous owner Sharon Morgan and trainer John Wainwright here June 19. The juvenile took a similar field from gate-to-wire to graduate by 7 3/4 lengths next out over this strip July 16. The Illinois-bred’s dam has not produced a foal since Shogood, but was bred to Forest Attack this year.
