Tapit Colt Scores in Del Mar Juv Turf S.

Hollywood Don, seventh on debut behind the reopposing Rare Candy (Twirling Candy) going a mile over this course July 26, earned his diploma with a narrow wire-to-wire victory at that course and distance Aug. 12. A bit overlooked by the bettors, the $245,000 OBSAPR buy sat back in fifth off hot early splits of :22.10 and :45.74. Taking closer order on the backstretch, the dark bay drew even with Hot Ore turning for home and shook free of that rival in the final sixteenth to win. “That was good,” winning trainer Peter Miller said. “It only took me seven weeks to get rolling here. It’s nice to win a good race, win a big race on the last weekend. The horse ran super and Brice [Blanc] gave him a great ride. He’s got a big long stride, he’s a beautiful Tapit colt that covers a lot of ground. We didn’t want him to get covered up, we wanted to keep him in the clear as much as we could. I think the [GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf] makes a lot of sense for him. I think he’s got that quality.” The winner’s dam Ocean Drive, who won a quartet of turfy graded stakes on the East Coast, is a half-sister to MGSW & MGISP multimillionaire Sun King (Charismatic). Hollywood Don’s half-sister West Ocean won several turf stakes and set a new course record at the Fair Grounds. This is also the family of GI Carter H. winner Peeping tom (Eagle Eyed).
