The name of Lael Stables’ Roy and Gretchen Jackson appeared on the docket when a 2-year-old daughter of Bernardini out of dual Grade I winner and near $2-million earner Pure Clan (Pure Prize) sold for $850,000 at this year’s OBS March Sale. The couple must like what they see there, as they returned to that particular factory and were extended to a session- and sales-topping $1.65 million for a striking chestnut colt by Tapit in the noon hour Wednesday at Keeneland September. The Feb. 5 foal, catalogued as hip 530, was consigned by Gainesway for his breeder Three Chimneys Farm, who was also represented by $1.5-million seller hip 511 a short time earlier. Goncalo Torrealba viewed Pure Clan as a potential foundation mare for his broodmare band when going to $4.5 million while carrying the aforementioned Bernardini at the Keeneland November sale in 2012. Pure Clan, whose Smart Strike filly of 2013 made $320,000 in this ring last September, foaled a filly by Tiznow this year.
