Manduro’s Ultra Stays Unbeaten In Lagardere
Updated: October 4, 2015 at 1:54 pm
Going two-for-two in a course-and-distance conditions event Sept. 9, Ultra belied lack of black-type experience to lead home a one-two for Godolphin and provide Andre Fabre with a fourth renewal and first since 1995. Introduced over seven furlongs at Clairefontaine July 25, the chestnut made virtually all there before enjoying hold-up tactics when following up in decisive fashion at this venue last time. Stalking First Selection (Spa) (Diktat {GB}) in second racing keenly early, the homebred quickly settled in the hands of Mickael Barzalona and traveled strongly to the quarter pole as Johannes Vermeer (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) made his presence felt on his outer. Shaken up there, he quickly had command with Ballydoyle’s favorite unable to quicken and was kept up to his work as the same operation’s Cymric closed in late. “He’s a real nice horse and another Group 1 winner by Manduro, who I trained,” Fabre commented. “He’s done everything right and is bred to stay next season, so will not be seen again this term.” John Gosden, trainer of Cymric, who was an eye-catching closer in a race where it paid to be prominent, said of the runner-up, “I’m delighted with that and he’s a nice progressive horse. He’ll be a mile-and-a-quarter horse next year.”
