Scat Daddy’s Surfside Tiara Annexes the Anoakia

Surfside Tiara, beaten a half-length when second as the even-money favorite in her five-furlong debut at Los Alamitos July 4, romped home impressively to graduate going 6 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar Aug. 9. Thrown into the deep end, she was seventh behind stablemate Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) in the seven-furlong GI Del Mar Debutante last time out Sept. 5. Cutting back to six furlongs and getting a class break here, Surfside Tiara sat just behind a four-wide battle for the lead down the backstretch through a quarter in :21.77. She found a seam to run through in upper stretch and collared Uptown Twirl late for a confident first stakes victory. Starlight Tiara, a half-sister to the dam of Saturday’s G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. winner Air Force Blue (War Front), produced a filly by Congrats in 2014 and was bred to Magician (Ire) this year.
