Lonhro Colt Runs Away With Coronation Futurity
Updated: November 8, 2015 at 10:10 pm
Shakhimat atoned for his last-out third in the grassy Cup and Saucer S. Oct. 11, leading virtually gate-to-wire to become his sire’s second North American stakes winner in Sunday’s valuable Coronation Futurity S. The Ontario-bred colt employed similar front-running tactics to wire a seven-furlong maiden over the local Poly Sept. 19 ahead of his effort in the Cup and Saucer, in which he raced prominently before weakening in the final furlong to finish third behind the runaway winner Conquest Enforcer (Into Mischief). Assigned gate one, Shakhimat was off fairly, but mustered beneath Emma-Jayne Wilson and was at the head of affairs by the time they’d reached the first turn. Allowed to gallop along on his own courage with only light pressure stacked up to his outside, the $60,000 Fasig-Tipton Florida graduate looked to be in some danger as market leader Conquest Twister rolled up three wide, having covered significant ground on the second bend. But Shakhimat had all the answers, and, despite racing on his incorrect lead in the final furlong, pulled away with every stride to score in a romp. Conquest Twister was a gallant second ahead of West Point’s Scholar Athlete in third. The winner hails from the extended female family of Adena Springs’s champion turf mare and GI BC Filly/Mare Turf heroine Perfect Sting (Red Ransom). Reggae Rose is the dam of a yearling filly by Silent Name (Jpn) and foaled a filly by Kitten’s Joy this term. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
