Into Mischief's Eclatant Noses Out Grand Job In Madison Cliffhanger

Stonestreet Stables homebred Eclatant (Into Mischief) locked up with the easy-in-the-markets Grand Job (Justify) with a bit more than a furlong to travel in Saturday's GI Resolute Racing Madison Stakes at Keeneland and was shoved across the wire first by Irad Ortiz, Jr. to take a thrilling renewal.

Away cleanly from the one hole, the bay filly showed good speed and was content to settle in third position as R Disaster (Awesome Slew) cut out a strong opening quarter-mile in :21.98 in advance of Grand Job, who was asked to improve her position at an early juncture to take up the chase from second.

Traveling well within the grasp of Ortiz, Jr. midway on the turn, Eclatant was fanned into about the five path in upper stretch and she and Grand Job sailed past the pacesetter as a team. Grand Job carried a slender advantage into the final furlong and looked like she was doing enough for the victory, only to be chinned on the line by Eclatant.

“I just tried to follow [trainer Brad Cox's] instructions to get behind the speed,” the winning jockey commented. “The filly helped big time because she broke sharp. After that I just took my time. I was able to get her out at the three-eighths pole, which I did, and I felt good at that point to go ahead and start working on her, and she got there.”

A facile winner of her first two career starts over sprint trips, including a local allowance in the fall of 2024, Eclatant was third to Good Cheer (Medaglia d'Oro) in the GII Golden Rod Stakes to close out that season.

An off-the-pace winner of last year's GII Forward Gal Stakes, she made her two other appearances at three over this seven-furlong distance, finishing ninth in the GII Eight Belles Stakes and fourth in the Leslie's Lady Stakes before getting some time off. Kept in training at four, Eclatant punched her ticket to this Grade I debut with a 2 3/4-length allowance score going 6 1/2 panels at Gulfstream Feb. 15.

A full-sister to former 'TDN Rising Star' presented by Hagyard Mutasaabeq, won won Keeneland's GII Bourbon Stakes at two in 2020, Eclatant becomes the 30th Grade I winner for her sire, who just last Saturday was represented by GI Curlin Florida Derby winner Commandment and Renegade, victorious in the GI Arkansas Derby.

A little more than a year after Mutasaabeq's success up the hill, Downside Scenario was purchased by Stonestreet for $1.15 million at the 2021 Keeneland November Sale, carrying the filly that would become Eclatant.

Herself a half-sister to the multiple UAE group winner Cool Cowboy (Kodiak Kowboy), Downside Scenario is also the dam of the 2-year-old filly Don't Suffer Fools (Curlin) and foaled a full-brother to Eclatant and Mutasaabeq this season.
