The Five Fastest Maidens of the Week for June 1 – 7

Last week, the fastest maiden by far was also the biggest surprise on our list with a $38.02 win mutuel.

Casse capped his sensational week with this gate-to-wire debut winner sold as a yearling for $35,000. The Hall of Fame trainer won eight races and made them count – four were stakes (including three Grade Is) at Saratoga, one was an allowance at Woodbine and three were maiden special weights including this one. Among those, the prolific Barber owned four solo and another in partnership.

Cold Spell was runnerup in Mashallah's sizzling 106 Beyer performance and a predictable 3/5 here, but didn't break as sharply then was outfinished by longshot My Gun's Loaded (below). The back-to-back seconds to start her career is reminiscent of her fast dam Chalon, who took seven ungraded stakes but had a frustrating seven 2nds against graded company with a photo-finish loss in the GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

She ran creditably in defeat in her first outing, then looked like a big shot at Saratoga, where the quality of her victory was better than the Beyer indicates. The track was yielding fast times and favoring speed, but her pace-pressing opening half in :44.05 compared favorably to the :43.97 in the Bed O'Roses a half-hour later.

As a 3-year-old, Penalty Box was consistent but couldn't get over the hump against future stakes winners Original Sin, Westwood and Privman. On Sunday he emerged after a six-month break to find a better spot as the only 4-year-old among nine starters. The California-based McCarthy has now started 20 different horses at the current Churchill meet and seven have made it to the winner's circle–two in graded stakes.

At 18/1 odds, she was the highest price in Saturday's Belmont Stakes card opener, thanks to a dismal debut in late December. But she delivered a powerful kick to sweep past odds-on favorite Cold Spell (above). She was a $650,000 yearling buy by Scharbauer, son of the former owners of famed Derby winner Alysheba. Scharbauer has been revving up his sales profile and most recently took the Kentucky Oaks with Always a Runner as co-owner with Three Chimneys.
