'Yankee' Blooms in Sires' Produce

An eye-catching fast-finishing second to 'TDN Rising Star' Capitalist (Aus) (Written Tycoon {Aus}) in the G1 Golden Slipper, Yankee Rose (Aus) (All American {Aus}) justified favouritism to secure her own Group 1 victory in the Inglis Sires' Produce, giving her trainer David Vandyke his first win at the highest level.

Sharply away and up with the leaders from the off, the near-black filly fought for her head as Zac Purton attempted to restrain her and asked her to settle in mid-division through the first few furlongs of the contest. Launching his attack on the bend, Purton brought his mount widest of all on the turn as the tempo quickened, but as the runners straightened for home, Yankee Rose was once again able to produce her withering run to leave Telperion (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) trailing by two and a half lengths. The Matthew Smith-trained outsider Faraway Town (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}) made impressive headway to land third from the lightly raced So You Think (NZ) colt Rivo Boy (Aus).

“When I walk around with her and deal with her I think she's just an average, small little filly but she's just outstanding,” said Vandyke, who admitted to being “numb” after landing his first Group 1.

He continued, “She just showed champion qualities in the Golden Slipper and went on with it today. I've been trying to win that Group 1 for 29 years, I've had probably 30 runners, but to just win that race like that today I just can't describe how I'm feeling at the moment. I can't believe I've actually won a Group 1 and to win one at Randwick, I started working here when I was a teenager and this track means so much to me.”

Zac Purton added, “It's great for David. The story is more about her win and the owners than it is for me. He was a brave man to run her first up in the Slipper and he's presented her again today in great fashion. I was able to come into the race when I needed to and she did the rest. It was a very good effort.”

Bought for A$10,000 as a yearling by syndicator Scott Darby, Yankee Rose is owned by a large group of people, many of whom are involved in racehorse ownership for the first time.

“It's a great story isn't it,” said Purton. “There are so many owners in so many different areas and it just goes to show that if you want to have a share in a horse you know your chance, you never know what you are going to get. This is what racing is about. Hope there are a few more stories like this in the years to come.”

Yankee Rose's dam, the twice-raced Condesaar (Aus), was sold for just A$6,000 at the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale last May when in foal to Magic Albert (Aus) and has subsequently produced a filly foal. Her 4-year-old gelding by the same stallion is named Aldesaar (Aus) and is in training with Chris Waller.
