Time And Motion Captures Memories Of Silver

Time and Motion | Adam Coglianese

Time and Motion finished fourth to start her career Aug. 31 at Saratoga before earning a black-type placing when third in the GIII Miss Grillo S. Sep. 27 at Belmont. A fast-finishing fifth at 56-1 in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filly Turf S., the homebred dropped down and broke her maiden with ease to begin her sophomore season Mar. 20 at Gulfstream. This race, named after her owner/breeder/trainer's star turf mare by Silver Hawk, was a natural spot for the step back into stakes company.

Bet down to favoritism, the bay sat in third as the six-horse field separated into three pairs down the backstretch. Just a length or two off a moderate pace of :24.76 and :50.62, Time and Motion made a three-wide move for the lead on the far turn as the field bunched up closer nearing the lane. There appeared to be many chances in midstretch, but the bay chalk proved best in the final eighth, edging clear for her first stakes win.

Time and Motion's dam, Ellie's Moment (Kris S.), ran second in a pair of GIII events at Aqueduct before producing Awesome Bet (Awesome Again), SW & GSP, $319,196, and this barn's Moment in Dixie (Dixieland Band), MGSP, $398,615. Ellie's Moment is also a half to MGISW and runner-up in the 1988 GI Preakness S. Brian's Time (Roberto).

“It brings back a lot of memories of Memories of Silver,” Jimmy Toner said after the race. “I love this filly. She's a high-quality filly. For her to win a race named after a horse I trained is doubly good. She's changed a lot from two to three. Let's face it, I got a little ambitious with her last year. She handled it well, and fortunately she came back good as a 3-year-old. This year we started off back down to reality, I think we're on the right track. If all goes well, we'll look at the Wonder Again [June 5] and ultimately, the [Grade I, $1 million] Belmont Oaks [July 9].”

Time and Motion showed more speed than she had previously, something John Velazquez said was a conscious decision.

“Last time I rode her,” Velazquez recalled, “I had a conversation [with Toner] and asked, 'why is she so far back?' and he couldn't figure it out. I asked if he'd mind if I used a little bit to get a position and see how she is. He said to go ahead and it worked, she responded.”
