Acapulco Impresses at Churchill

Acapulco | Coady

Acapulco, hammered down to even-money favoritism against these overmatched foes, seized the early advantage and was immediately joined by a pair of rivals on her outside. Hard-pressed through a sharp opening quarter in :22.55, the chestnut fought them off in the stretch and cruised clear to win as she pleased. “She ran great,” winning trainer Wesley Ward remarked. “You couldn't ask for anything better, especially with a little give in the ground today. She came back a little tired and that's good.” The conditioner added, “[Her jockey at Royal Ascot] will be either Ryan Moore or maybe Robby [Albarado] because he knows her so well; he does a lot of the work with her. We'll see. Of course it will be Ryan's call first because he's contracted to ride [for Coolmore]. But if they have another stallion in the race, he may be committed to Aidan [O'Brien]. It's not my call but [Albarado] is who I'd ask to use [if Moore] is unavailable. Robby has done a lot of work with her and rides her pretty good.” Third on debut sprinting on the dirt at Churchill last May, Acapulco earned her diploma with an impressive victory in Royal Ascot's G2 Queen Mary S. six weeks later. Wesley Ward was so confident in his filly that he finished off her juvenile campaign with a try against older horses in the G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. at York, where she finished a gutsy second last August. The $750,000 OBSMAR buy made her sophomore debut a winning win with an optional claimer victory on the synthetic at Turfway Feb. 19. The winner's dam has a 2-year-old filly by Bodemeister and recently produced a full-sister to Acapulco. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
