After beating the smart Victory Bond (GB) (Medicean {GB}) over a mile at Newbury in October, Algometer finished second to Midterm (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and clear of the third in the Apr. 22 G3 Sandown Classic Trial over 10 furlongs and maintained his momentum with a solid performance here. Settled in second early tracking the moderate tempo set by Prize Money, the grey edged ahead with 2 1/2 furlongs remaining and asserted in the final furlong as his inherent stamina came into play. “It would need to rain at Epsom for us to think about running in the Derby, and if it didn't we would leave it and take him to Ireland [for the G1 Irish Derby at The Curragh June 25],” trainer David Simcock said. “Realistically, the [G1] St Leger [at Doncaster Sept. 10] is the right race for him later in the year. He's a horse that gives everything, but today's race was never going to be run to suit.” Algometer looks like he could be on track to become the best progeny out of his highweight dam Albanova (GB) (Alzao), winner of the G1 Deutschlandpreis, G1 Rheinland-Pokal and G1 Preis von Europa. His third dam is Kirsten Rausing's outstanding producer Alruccaba (Ire) (Crystal Palace {Fr}) and her trail of success is seemingly endless. On the fillies and mares's side of things, Albanova's full-sister Alborada (GB) remains the standard-bearer with two wins in the G1 Champion S. as it used to be staged at Newmarket, while the colts to have sprung from this dynasty include the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and GI Shadwell Turf Mile S. hero and sire Aussie Rules (Danehill), the G1 Epsom Derby runner-up Dragon Dancer (GB) (Sadler's Wells) and the highweight G2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner and G1 Irish Derby and G1 St Leger runner-up Midas Touch (GB) (Galileo {Ire}). The latter is just one of a number of this family to have excelled at Ballydoyle, with the high-quality Sadler's Wells fillies Yesterday (Ire) and Quarter Moon (Ire) and more recently Diamondsandrubies (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) hitting the target at group 1 level. Unfortunately, Albanova aborted her 2014 foal when bred to Frankel (GB) and was barren last year to Invincible Spirit (Ire). Click for the Racing Post result. Video, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
