Cali Invader Passes Class Test in Victory Ride

Coppa | Chelsea Durand

California invader Coppa kept her perfect record in tact with a gritty score in the Victory Ride. Away well, the chalk tracked from a two-wide third as speedy longshot Behrnik's Bank (Bank Heist) ticked off opening splits of :22.53 and :45.61. Drawing alongside the top two turning for home, the bay seized command in early stretch and held off late advances from One True Kiss and Malibu Stacy to either side of her to become the first black-type winner for her sire Yesbyjimminy.

“She settled real nice for Joe [Talamo] today,” said Chris Davis, assistant to winning trainer Phil D'Amato. “When she got clear and the horses came running to her late, she dug in and galloped out way in front. She's still learning, but she's doing everything the right way. We couldn't be happier.”

Coppa, a $14,000 RNA at the 2014 OBS August sale, became the most expensive horse ever sold for her sire when purchased for $210,000 at the following year's OBS April sale. A frontrunnng debut winner sprinting at Del Mar Nov. 1, the sophomore went box-to-wire again next out to clear her first-level allowance condition at Santa Anita May 21.

The winner has a 2-year-old half-sister by Put It Back and produced a filly by Yes It's True May 6 of this year.
