Lady Shipman Finally Gets Her Graded Score in Royal North

Lady Shipman | Michael Burns

Lady Shipman earned a long-awaited graded stakes tally with a front-running score in Woodbine's GIII Royal North S. The nine-time stakes winner was forced to try males three times since October looking for her first graded score. She was a neck second in last year's GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, finished seventh after a slow start in the G1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan Mar. 26 and had most recently run fifth over course and distance in the GII Hilander S. July 3. Bouncing away smoothly as the odds-on choice in this feature, the chestnut made the easiest of leads, going clear through a :23.26 quarter-mile, essentially crawling for a filly of her quality. Widening past a half of :45.97, she never had a serious threat in the lane, holding sway for the triumph over She's Explosive, who gave game chase throughout the stretch.

“I spoke with (winning trainer) Kiaran (McLaughlin) this morning and it put a lot of confidence in me,” said winning rider Jesse Campbell. “I was at the Breeders' Cup when she ran and I watched some of her previous races. Kiaran told me that he loved her today and to ride her like she's the best horse. She made the lead a little easier than I thought she would, and with a filly of this quality, it's going to be a tough day for everyone else.”

Owner/breeder Randall Lowe offered: “We had this planned all along. After she showed what she could do against the boys, and she didn't get a very clean trip last time, we thought we'd run her right back against the girls and see if they can beat us. She showed today, you can't catch her.”

Pedigree Notes:

Lady Shipman is by 2008 Champion 2-year-old colt and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Midshipman (Unbridled's Song). Her dam was a five-time winner and earned $172,123. The winner has a 2-year-old half-brother by Leroidesanimaux (Brz) named Dr. Corday, a yearling Treasure Beach (GB) half-brother named Beta Max and a weanling half-sister by Poseidon's Warrior.
