A recently formed partnership between leading owner Lim's Stable and Australian owner Marc McLean celebrated its first winner together when Paperback Trooper (Aus) (Publishing {Aus}) easily defeated even-money Sir Isaac (Aus) (Dream Ahead) to land his racetrack debut Sunday at Kranji. The only other rival in the market at odds just shy of 5-1, Paperback Trooper was in the thick of it from the start and settled in third spot as Sir Isaac took them along going easily on the engine. The chalk drifted a bit wide into the lane and still led under a hold at the 200m, but Paperback Trooper kept plugging away further down towards the inside, hit the front with a half-furlong to race and came away to score by 2 3/4 lengths from 2-year-old Sir Isaac, to whom he conceded seven kilos (video). “Mark's got five horses here and that's his first winner. Good for him,” commented winning trainer Steven Burridge. “I thought with 57kgs for a first start, it was a bit of a question mark, and hopefully he would fire up. But he drew a good barrier (3) and [jockey] Dan [Beasley] rode him well.” The winner's sire, a dual Group 3 winner in Australia for Lloyd Williams and John Singleton and trainer John Sadler, resides at Raheen Stud, a Queensland nursery which also bred and sold Mystic Master (Aus) (Snippetson {Aus}), winner of Sunday's S$200,000 Juvenile Championship S. at Kranji.
