For the second straight year, Mongolian Khan (NZ) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) was named New Zealand's Horse of the Year in a ceremony that took place at Auckland's Langham Hotel on Sunday night. The 4-year-old's lone victory of the 2015/16 season came in Australia's prestigious G1 Caulfield Cup, and he also earned champion stayer honours for that win. Mongolian Khan will stand his first season at stud this year at Windsor Park Stud.
Mongolian Khan's former Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained stablemate Turn Me Loose (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) also earned double honours Sunday night, taking the champion sprinter and champion middle distance titles on the back of wins in Australia's G1 Emirates S. and G1 Futurity S. last season.
The remaining winners were as follows: champion 2-year-old: Sacred Elixir (NZ) (Pour Moi {Ire}); champion 3-year-old: Xtravagant (NZ) (Pentire {GB}); Filly of the Year: Sofia Rosa (NZ) (Makfi {GB}); Owner of the Year: Lib Petagna; Breeder of the Year: Cambridge Stud.
